How often do we look and see what or who is around us?  I mean really look.  Apparently, I don’t as often as I thought I did because I somehow missed this beautiful girl who lives a block away.  I met Carla a while back and had no idea that she had a high school senior.  So, when she asked me about photographing her daughter who liked the senior photos I took of her friend, Rachel (I have photographed 2 girls named Rachel so I played it off), I said of course.

Anna only had one request…She wanted a photo under the A that is on the Franklin Mountains and can be seen from Noel Field by our homes.  We were able to get a few locations in and one was a last minute add.  I’m lucky to have great clients who roll with me.

I’m also lucky because I had a huge computer scare while transferring images for back up and I thought I had lost everything.  I didn’t touch my computer until my husband returned from a trip to help me.  It was all there but I lost a week of editing during the process.  Again, AMAZING clients.

I truly love photographing seniors and this girl was amazing.  I hope it was worth the wait!

This is where flexibility played a huge role in our adventure.  I was told to pick a place that I felt would work best.  I had seen her amazing outfits and knew I wanted a desert background.  I took off with Carla and Anna, taking them to my favorite location at Heinrich Park.  As I parked and we unloaded I remembered a good friend of mine posting a video of her dog running through the desert near her house.  I asked them to wait while I called her to find out exactly where that was located.  I had the information I needed and, luckily, they were up for the new location which was only about 5 minutes away.  We parked at my friend’s house and walked over the berm and right into the perfect spot.  Anna rocked it!

A little unsure at first.

It didn’t last long.

Believe it or not, there are several options when photographing in the desert.  There were so many spots to take advantage of out there.  Yes, there is green to be found.

Her mom was making her laugh.  Love it!

The tree attacked.

She recovered nicely.

I saw a huge tumble weed and mentioned it to Carla.  She started laughing and told me an Anna story I have to share.  Soon after arriving in El Paso they came across some tumbleweed (I can’t remember if it was in motion or not but that’s not important to the story).  Carla pointed it out and told her that it was tumbleweed to which Anna replied, “Tumbleweed is real?!”  So, natuarally, I had to get some shots of her with it.

Gorgeous!

Just a few more shots before heading on to our next location.  My favorite from this group can be found here.

As always, I had packed up my gear and we were headed to my car when I noticed the wall with amazing light.  We stopped for a few shots and it was my first share on my Facebook page.

That smile is amazing.

So many amazing images to share.

In all honesty we had no plan in place so when we got back to my car I gave her a couple of options for our next stop and she chose Downtown El Paso and it did not disappoint.  Did I mention how much I love the springtime for photo sessions?  I never feel rushed because we have plenty of light for hours on end in the evening.

Seriously, she is…there are no words.

All of these were in one general area.  It was time to head towards San Jacinto Plaza with a stop at her favorite place.

The rest of the images in this section were all from the plaza area.  Such a beautiful site for sitting back and relaxing while people watching or for taking photos of a beautiful girl.

Both versions are worthy of being shared here.

I was able to get some shots before we were asked to get out of the ditch.  She wanted to know why we were in there and I told her that it’s where the prettiest flowers were located.  She said that most were just weeds and she cuts them down at home.  I showed her an image on my camera and she smiled and agreed that they look pretty.

Peek A Boo

The pretty weeds with the purple blooms.

We picked up with the other outfits a few days later in between wind storms.  It actually started the day we were shooting but not until later so it all worked out and The Replica on Fort Bliss and Noel Field were the perfect backdrops.  This group of images are a complete surprise for her mom because she was unable to come with us.  I hope she likes what we did.

I want to share them ALL.

 Beautiful.

The Replica has so many possibilities when it comes to photos and I only tapped into a little bit of it with Anna.  I love this location and her outfit was perfect.  I have two images from this location that I shared on my page.  1st image and 2nd image.

Amazing from any angle.

We started walking and saw a couple of baby bunnies eating near where I was going to take her so we adjusted.  You can see them at the end of the wooden deck where she is sitting.  They live under the deck so they would hop back underneath and come right back out when we would move.

You would never guess that right before the session the heel of her shoe broke and she had to do a balancing act.  Effortless.

I wanted to get a shot of her class ring but with her in the shot as well.  She always knew exactly what I was saying and asking of her.

As we were walking, I never have an idea of what I’m going to do, I saw this pop of color and knew it would be perfect.  I should probably explain myself.  I will look at outfits and go with a location but until I can’t plan ahead because it never works for me.  I shoot what I feel and when it’s a photo session I base it off of how my “model (s)’ feel.  You can’t force it because it will show.  Luckily, we had to force nothing on either day.

She was a safe distance from the cacti.

Two different looks in the same spot.

We headed to Noel Field (across the street) for the field shots with the “A”.  Sadly, there was still too much sun so we just had fun until the sun hid behind the mountain.  Another one of my favorite images on Facebook.

The winds were picking up but we weren’t giving up on the “A”.

This is when the sun went behind the mountain.

Carla, thank you so much for allowing me to be a small part of Anna’s memories here at Fort Bliss.  I had a wonderful time with you and her as we wandered around El Paso and Fort Bliss looking for the perfect spot to accentuate her natural beauty.  She is such a special soul and will go on to bigger and better things.  Best of luck to you, Anna, as you begin a new chapter in your life book.

“and this is the part

where you find out

who you are”

I love photographing seniors and this session is just another reason why.

It was several months ago that I received a text from Alicia asking about senior photos.  Time passed and once spring arrived she messaged me saying that they wanted to get a time set up.   Naturally, we had to watch the weather and adjust since we do live in El Paso, TX.  You just never know what Mother Nature has planned.

As the day got closer I asked for a photo of Meredith’s outfits and as soon as I saw the first one I became very excited and had visions running through my head.  I knew exactly where I wanted to go and hoped that they were game.  They were!

I had only met Meredith once and seen her a couple of times but knowing her mom I went in to this session with high hopes for some gorgeous images of a beautiful girl.  She did not disappoint and after two locations we were done and I couldn’t wait to get to work on my computer.

We went to my favorite location that offers so many different scenarios and fit her first two outfits perfectly.  Heinrich Park/Hitt Canyon Trail was our first stop and turned out even better than I expected.  We started off with a few posed shots to get her comfortable since selfies are nothing like having some crazy lady giving you directions with a camera in your space.

I absolutely love the hat and her smile.

No words.

My favorite from this group is on my page.

I could tell she was comfortable with the camera and my weird ways so it was time to move on and get some more amazing shots.

So cute.

It’s always fun when I say, “Now you’re going to walk towards me and do a turn then keep walking.  When I say stop, don’t pose.  Please don’t fall, either.”  Once I did my own, not so modelesque (is that even a word?), walk as an example she blew me away.

Since it is El Paso, the desert, and we have had NO rain, flowers are hard to come by.  I found a small patch, just one, and took full advantage.

I had to get more close ups of her and you are about to see just why.  Well, if you follow my Facebook page you saw this image and actually already know why.

We decided after all of this amazingness that it was time to change outfits and make more magic and Texas requires boots.

I was thrilled that her outfit was perfect for one of my favorite spots.  It all came together without even trying.  That is magic.

Seriously…

Beautiful profile.

You can’t live in the desert and not get a photo with cacti.  We just had to make sure to keep a safe distance.

I did my usual, it’s time to go now… Oh, wait, let’s get some here.  You’ll understand why when you see the next few images.  My favorite is located here.

Now we’re done at this location.  Our next location was Meredith’s choice and we went downtown.  It was my first time shooting there and it was full of opportunities.

This wall with her outfit was perfection.

As we were walking I notice a section with benches that were screaming at us to use them so we did and I already shared one on my Facebook page.

The next few images are all in the same vicinity just different directions.

We moved back towards the Convention Center area and I found some funky big things that looks like the perfect frame.  They happened to be in a great location to get a shot from high up.

I have another great black and white image here.

Meredith had recently been downtown and found a couple of spots that she liked so we headed that way for the next shots.

We made our way to the San Jacinto Plaza for some photos with a lot of greenery.  It’s a gorgeous area that has just recently been re-opened.

I love when she laughs.

All we had left was the graffiti walls that she wanted photos in front of and now that the sun was down we could get that done on the way back to the car.

Thank you Alicia for thinking of me when it came time for Meredith’s senior photos.  She is such a beautiful girl and was so easy to photograph.  She doesn’t take a bad photo.  I hope you love the images as much as I enjoyed taking them for you.  I can’t wait to see what her future holds because I know that it will be amazing.

I met Melissa at a friend’s house last year (it still throws me off that we are in 2017) and I quickly realized that she is someone special.  She has to be one of the sweetest girls (yes she’s young enough to still call a girl) I have ever met.  I met her son at the same time and he is such a cutie that my daughter was begging to babysit him.  She finally got to watch him and they just clicked.

Brian, Melissa’s husband, was getting out of the Army and they were moving back to her home in Hawaii.  What I didn’t mention is that I Melissa is a LuLaRoe fashion consultant and that is how I met her.  She needed some photos for her business and it was the perfect time to get family photos done as well.  Melissa’s only request was that Brian wear his uniform one last time.

We lucked out that the day we were able to get out was beautiful.  We had such a good time and I spent most of the time in denial that they were moving.  Since we were limited on time we stuck close and did the entire session at the Fort Bliss Replica and Noel Field.  Liam had just woken up from a nap so we had to get him comfortable with the camera suddenly in his face.

I tried to get a couple of shots of Melissa and I got one before Liam came back to get in the shot.  I ended up only getting one but I’ll take it because you can’t say no to that cute little face.

Such a cute family.

My favorite family photo is on my Facebook Page.  We headed over to a different area to get some shots of Melissa and Brian but they were photo bombed.

Whew!  I made it.

Golden hour was starting so we headed across to Noel Field to take advantage of the open space and amazing light.

How gorgeous is this?!

R U N ! !

Oh, the energy.

I’ll get him!

Success.

Mom’s turn.

Liam and his daddy went off to run and play while I took a few of just Melissa.

Love her laugh.

It’s all fun and games until someone gets hurt.

Liam soon realized that the houses around us looked like mine so Karina must be near.  He kept asking for her so I made a quick phone call and told her to come out to the field.  While we waited for Karina and Melissa soothed Liam I got a couple of Brian.

I don’t normally add someone who isn’t part of the family into the images but this has to be shared because it was so stinking cute.  I saw Karina walking towards us so I told her to run.  Liam was given the okay to go to her and her did.

It was all about the boo boo.

Now that I had help I could get some shots of just Melissa and Brian.  The golden light was gone but it’s still pretty awesome in the desert.  They were pretty easy to photograph but after a bit I lost Brian and knew that it was time to stop.

Up to no good.

Melissa did ask me for one pose that was reminiscent of when he returned from a deployment.  I was happy to make it happen.

I have no idea what he said.

Yep, he’s done.

I turned around and had to get one last shot of Liam running around playing because the light was done and it was time to go.

SaySaying bye-bye to his buddy.  So cute.

Melissa, I truly wish I had met you sooner.  You have a heart of gold and know that you will go far with your business.  I hope that you all enjoy this new chapter in your lives and am so thankful for social media and the ability to stay connected.  Enjoy your family and that precious little boy.  I hope you will remember your time at Fort Bliss as happy and rewarding.

I am constantly reminded as to just how small the Army really is when I am brought back to people I never thought I would see again.  When I went to a holiday concert a year ago at my daughter’s school I was walking past the bleachers in the gym when I heard someone call my name.  I looked up and I saw a face I hadn’t seen in 5 years.

While we were stationed at Fort Hood and I was still learning, I would photograph my son’s PeeWee football games as practice.  This is how I met Regina.  Her son played on one of the teams and she approached me about photographing her husband’s welcome home ceremony.   I agreed and as I look back I can’t believe how much the kids have grown.

img_9373

Their daughter and my daughter are great friends and were on the 7th grade volleyball team together.  Now, they are playing soccer for the school.  They didn’t know each other then but are now together often.  I just love the connections made with the Army life.  Thanks to technology I know they will continue on with their friendship.

Regina found out that they will be moving this summer and wanted to get some family photos done to have memories of Fort Bliss.  Since all three kids were on a sports team she wanted to get shots of them in their uniform tops.

I can’t begin to tell you how much fun I had with this family.  There was laughter, running, more laughter, falling, more laughter, hugs, more laughter, and a lot of love.  They definitely know how to make the most of their time together.   Enjoy their photo journey and I bet you will have a smile on your face the entire time.

I always start out with basics to get kids comfortable with me and the camera.  Sometimes, it helps with the adults as well.  Regina had one image she knew she wanted and it was of all of them together with their jersey numbers showing.  Done!

cp4a7975cp4a7979Definitely not the same kids from the first image.

I went ahead and decided to go for individual images of the kids but catching Aaron was not as easy as the big kids so I got him with his prized possessions, his trophy and soccer ball.

cp4a7989

Rene and Alixys were much easier and I was even able to get a smile out of Rene.

cp4a8003cp4a8020

Next up was some family time.  This is when things got interesting and all the laughter ensued.

cp4a8024It seems that the direction I gave them needed to be discussed for a bit.

cp4a8026That almost worked.

cp4a8035Much better.

cp4a8041I told them to talk to one another and Alixys talked to me instead.

cp4a8047Then this happened.cp4a8046

Time to refocus and try again.  Lets run this time.  I know it sounds like it might cause chaos but it didn’t?  Okay, maybe a little.

cp4a8051cp4a8078Yep, that went well.

I decided to try a different technique but everything turns into a competition and they just want to knock each other down.  Somehow, spread out and then quickly come together meant push against everyone.  A lot of leaning coming up.  My favorite is on my page located here.

cp4a8074cp4a8096The other side is fighting back now.

cp4a8097This was a miss.

cp4a8098

My daughter and two other friends were on the field with us so I decided to let the kids go off and play while I grabbed a few shots of the lovebirds.  You’ll quickly see why I went with lovebirds.

cp4a8107The golden hour was the perfect time for these two.

cp4a8185

cp4a8192“You put your arms around me and I’m home.”

cp4a8198cp4a8131cp4a8138I wonder what he’s telling her.

cp4a8111Maybe we don’t need to know.

cp4a8145cp4a8147

This didn’t last long as the photo bombing children returned.  They were ready for more family time and I posted my favorite image of Regina’s determination to kiss on my Facebook page.

cp4a8116The surprise attack led to this…

cp4a8117which quickly went downhill…

cp4a8160Apparently, she doesn’t like to be attacked by her kids.

cp4a8166cp4a8164They broke her down.

This is when I lost what little control I had.

cp4a8171cp4a8175

I was able to get a couple more of just the kids but they were pretty much done.

cp4a8204cp4a8212

Thank you Garcia family for a fun filled afternoon.  I’m so glad you saw me in that gymnasium and truly thankful for the friendship the girls started.  I’m sad that you are leaving but the Army is funny and we could easily meet up again.  I hope that you enjoyed looking back on this day and even laughed a little remembering the chaos and laughter.  Yes, Karina’s volleyball is still up on the pavilion from when they were playing as I took your photos but it was worth it.
