A few months ago I was asked by Rhonda about photographing her husband’s Battalion Change of Command Ceremony. They still didn’t have a date but knew sometime in October. Fast forward a couple of months and I receive a message from Sara asking the same thing and with no date. I immediately put two and two together and realized that they were both asking about the same ceremony.
I didn’t want to leave them without so I spoke to my good friend, Alice, who also happens to be a great photographer. She offered to be my second shooter and this way we would be able to cover both families and all angles. Needless to say, I was thrilled and looking forward to shooting with Alice.
Our next obstacle was the location. For those who have never been at Fort Bliss it is huge. I have no idea how to navigate the buildings on West Bliss much less having to figure our East Bliss. Luckily, my neighbor was going to be there so we followed her to the hanger. Oh, did I forget to mention that they are Army Aviators?

Once we arrived we started shooting as we waited for friends and family to arrive.

The spouses of these men do more than most will ever know.  It is done selflessly to make sure that the soldiers are able to focus on the mission without worrying about those at home.  Rhonda took care of her family and made sure that the families of the unit were cared for, as well.  She made sure that the information flow was smooth and got to everyone.  She organized functions to keep the spouses together and was the adviser to the company level leaders.

3-501_BN_CoC-7COL O’Connor had some very kind words to say.

3-501_BN_CoC-573-501_BN_CoC-583-501_BN_CoC-563-501_CoC-42Heading out for the passing of the colors.

Key to the change of command is the passing of the Unit’s Colors.  They represent the heritage and history of the unit and the unity and loyalty of it’s soldiers.  The colors are the commander’s symbol of authority representing his responsibilities to the organization.  Wherever the commander is so are the colors.  The Command Sergeant Major (CSM), the senior enlisted soldier of the battalion, is the custodian of the colors.

3-501_CoC-433-501_BN_CoC-71The CSM passes the colors to LTC Rice for the last time.

3-501_BN_CoC-72This is an emotional time for all as they have spent one to two years together as a unified team.

3-501_BN_CoC-74LTC Rice will now pass the colors to COL O’Connor (Brigade Commander), thereby relinquishing his responsibilities and authority.

3-501_CoC-603-501_CoC-63

Now that this has gone full circle it’s time for the speeches.  This is the outgoing commander’s time to thank all the soldiers for all of their accomplishments, the leadership for their support and mentorship, and his family for all of their support.

3-501_BN_CoC-89COL O’Connor speaks first about both the outgoing and incoming commander.

3-501_BN_CoC-98It is a very emotional time when one leaves command.  You have become a family and it is very sad to leave.

Now friends, family, and the soldiers say their last farewells to LTC Rice and his family before heading in to LTC Arriaga’s reception.

Thank you for asking me to document this special day.  Dan and Rhonda, always remember the wonderful memories you have from this time and all that you have accomplished.  Jason and Sara, enjoy every minute because it will go by quickly.

**A special thanks to Alice for her assistance during all of this.  I love shooting with you and hope that we get to do it again.

It’s a small world was never a truer statement. I am on a few photography pages on Facebook and one day someone posted asking for photographers who shoot welcome home ceremonies. I commented, along with several others, and waited to see if she if I would be contacted. I received a message and we quickly realized that we are both from the Rio Grande Valley. For those who don’t know, that is South Texas. When we say South we don’t mean San Antonio be mean 4 hours south of San Antonio. Few people know where that is so we immediately had a connection.
It turns out that this was their first deployment since getting married and she was beyond excited. Like all things military, the date changed a few times and a few days before it looked like the newest date was going to stick. I just had to wait for confirmation of the time.
The big day arrived and I headed over to the ADAG. I arrived and received a call from Claudia that her little one had a wardrobe malfunction so she was running behind. Luckily, it takes a while for the whole process to unfold so I was pretty sure she would make it in time. I headed outside with the other families while I waited.
They arrived with time to spare before the plane arrived. The anticipation was brewing and I could see how nervous she was while we watched the plane taxi down the runway.

CP4A1622Checking out the camera.

CP4A1624The screams are louder as the anticipation builds.

CP4A1625Her sign says it all.

CP4A1634Eye contact was made.

Once they go by it’s time to go back inside and wait as the soldiers go through their final steps so that they can be released to their families.  It’s so hard to see them walk by and not be able to touch them or speak to them immediately.  Claudia had to try and keep Penelope entertained while waiting.  They had a bouncy house for the kids but she wanted Mommy to go in with her.

CP4A1636CP4A1639CP4A1643She was still unsure about the lady with the camera.

CP4A16445 more minutes.

We heard them talking to the families with directions and an explanation of how it all would happen.  I’m pretty sure all anyone heard was “They will come through there in a few minutes.”  Claudia found her spot and was back to waiting.

Talk about being at the right place at the right time.  I was at a friend’s house when Lydia came by to visit her.  She asked if I had ever shot a redeployment ceremony (for those who are not military, that is when soldiers come home from a deployment).

The last time I had the opportunity to shoot one was at Fort Hood in 2011 and I was thrilled that she asked me document this happy occasion. The excitement and nervous energy is like nothing else I have ever experienced. Lydia’s husband deployed with the 4th Battalion, 501st Aviation Regiment (Pistoleros) to the Persian Gulf 9 months ago and this was the last group of the battalion to come home.

I had been to the location of the ceremony once before and it was at night and my husband was driving.  I had an idea on how to get there so I left early in case I took a wrong turn.  Luckily, my memory was intact and I found the building with no problem.  There were 104 soldiers on this flight and I knew that there would be a lot of families so I called Lydia to see where she was so that I could get to her quickly.  Well, I didn’t even wait for an answer because she was easy to find.  She was talking to friends and had the biggest smile I had ever seen and she was giddy.

The girls were ready for their daddy to come home but having to wait is not something kids like to do.  They just wanted him home and Victoria seemed a bit overwhelmed with all of the people.

CP4A0592

CP4A0591She was not letting go of her mommy.

We got the word that the plane was about 5 minutes from landing so we made our way out into the heat to watch and wait.  The first thing I noticed were several AH-64 Apache helicopters lined up on the airfield.

CP4A0600CP4A0602It was taking quite a bit of time so waiting in the shade was the best option.

After what seemed like forever, because that’s how it feels when you are anxiously waiting for your soldier to arrive, the plane landed and made it’s way to the stopping point.

CP4A0606

CP4A0617Getting into position.  When the Division Commander gets to the plane you know it’s almost time.

CP4A0610The anticipation is stifling.

CP4A0613

There is always a weight that is removed from the family when you know the plane has landed.

CP4A0614

More waiting.

CP4A0618

CP4A0626Waiting is hard on the little ones.

CP4A0635One guess why she is so happy…

CP4A0634HE’S HOME!!!!!!!!!!!

CP4A0639

Happy and relieved to see their daddy.

CP4A0636

If you haven’t caught on yet, the key word for all of this is waiting.  They only got to see him as he was walking by and now they have to wait while he turns in some of his gear.  We went back inside to wait for about 30 minutes for the official ceremony where he will be released and “given back” to his family.  This has to be the hardest part because you know he’s close by but you can’t physically touch him or even see him.

CP4A0648

CP4A0651Keeping the kids busy while they wait.

We heard the smoke machine and knew that it was finally time for the final group of Pistoleros to come in and the quick ceremony to begin.  What an awesome feeling as we watched it all unfold.

CP4A0653So close.

CP4A0657

CP4A0658CP4A0662They are getting into position and she is beyond happy and excited.

CP4A0664CP4A0666All of the emotions start running together.

CP4A0671They know what’s next and they are ready.

GO TO YOUR FAMILY!

CP4A0676CP4A0679CP4A0682CP4A0688Together again.

Now it’s time to just enjoy that he’s home.  Victoria was still unsure about it all but her daddy was patient and slowly worked on getting her comfortable with him again.

Thank you for allowing me to be a part of this special day in your family.  I loved every second I spent with you all and I also got caught up in the emotional moments.  Yes, there were tears all around.  I hope you are enjoying your time together and can’t wait to see you out and about together.

  • Karen - WOW, just beautiful!!! You did an amazing job capturing this family reunion!ReplyCancel

I met Jill through mutual friends on Facebook and I am forever grateful.  She is an amazing person and a wonderful friend.  We were moving and she was one of a few I would know upon arriving after a cross country trip.  It was even better when I found out that our husbands would be working in the same place.  My husband met her first and when I asked him what she was like, I only knew her online, his response was “she’s southern”.  Vague but typical.  I should have know better.

Fast forward a year and I am still in denial that she and her family are moving away and I will be back to online communication only with her.  Seeing the moving truck in front of her house with boxes all over the yard helped but I can pretend that I saw that at someone else’s house.

Seriously now, I was thrilled and nervous when she asked me to take photos of her family.  She knew what she wanted and where and that made it somewhat easier.  Location is half the battle and that was taken care of for me.  As we got closer to the day I started trying to figure out how I was going to get their personalities to shine through with just my camera and lenses.  How do you show Jill’s caring nature and witty sense of humor?  She is also able to throw a “bless her heart” with no one being the wiser.  The one thing I was sure of was that I would be able to show her impeccable style.  I also had to figure out how I would show Jim’s drive, determination, and smile (yes, he does smile)?  His love of his family was plain as day and I didn’t have to worry about that one at all.  Then there’s Jack, 13 and all boy not wanting to smile because he had recently gotten some new hardware and it’s just not his thing.  Honestly, is it in any boy’s nature to smile for the camera?

I hope I was able to capture all of the above and more.  This was a special session and the pressure was on.  We started out at their home which happens to be a historical Queen Anne.
